Climate Talk: Nest Boxes and the Impacts of Conservation Management (Live Webinar)
Climate Talk: Nest Boxes and the Impacts of Conservation Management (Live Webinar) This program will be held virtually. Once you register you will receive a zoom link in the confirmation. This webinar will also be RECORDED and available for 2 months to all registrants. Thursday, January 21, 2021 6:30-7:30 PM Instructor: Dr. Lucy Zipf Tower Hill Botanic Garden is dedicated to understanding the ways climate change impacts our world and exploring methods we can use to combat its effects and improve our climate outlook. "Climate Talks" are an opportunity to connect with experts in the field to learn and understand the current effects of climate change and explore ways we can make a difference. This climate talk will explore breeding habitat that is in decline for many bird species in North America because of climate and land use changes. Conservation areas tasked with protecting threatened bird populations often actively manage landscapes and erect artificial nesting structures to mitigate breeding habitat loss. However, by interfering in nesting habitat, humans have the potential to draw birds to unsuitable habitats. During this talk Lucy will dive into the history and impacts of conservation management and artificial nest boxes (think bigger bird houses) on breeding success in cavity nesting birds. Using this analysis, we can identify management practices that promote reproduction and survival in vulnerable bird populations that call our local community home. Dr. Lucy Zipf is a community ecologist studying the integrated impacts of co-occurring global changes - climate, habitat, and conservation management - on biological communities in New England. Lucy recently received her PhD from Boston University and is currently a Visiting Lecturer at Wellesley College. Check out more info about Lucy's research projects at lucyzipf.com.
