Learn the basics of how to read IRS and Massachusetts tax notices, how penalties and interest are computed, and understand basic collections workout options for your clients.
Mike Duffy, co-chair of the Tax Practice Group at Fletcher Tilton PC, will cover how taxes, interest, and penalties are computed and assessed by the government. Discuss limits to the government’s ability to audit and assess taxpayers, and understand appeal rights and statutory protections available to taxpayers. Attendees will learn about the tools available to the IRS and Massachusetts Department of Revenue for collecting back taxes. The presentation will additionally cover basic tax workout strategies such as offers in compromise, installment plans, and using the statute of limitations on collections.
Brief Bio
Mike Duffy earned his bachelor’s degree from California State University, Los Angeles. After completing his law degree at Washington and Lee University School of Law, Mr. Duffy received an LL.M. in Taxation from New York University School of Law. Michael is admitted to practice in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. He is also a former “Big 4” state and local tax manager and holds a CPA certificate in Connecticut.
