Langston Hughes' Black Nativity
Mechanics Hall and the National Center of Afro-American Artists are pleased to present the Worcester premiere of Langston Hughes’ Black Nativity! A 50-year Boston tradition, this remarkable holiday experience is a gospel telling of the Christmas story of hope and peace for people of good will. Black Nativity is a highly energetic song-play narrated in Black vernacular speech and featuring drama, dance, and African drumming. Prepare to be swept away by the joy-filled cast of children, men, and women lifting their voices in song.
"One of the most amazing and inspirational shows I have ever seen."
Black Nativity is a 50-year Boston tradition and brilliant New England holiday classic. The music of Black Nativity was recorded in our Hall last spring as part of its 50th Anniversary recognition. Black Nativity is a creation of one of America's most important poets of the 20th century, Langston Hughes. His creation celebrates the message of Joy to the World and peace to men of goodwill. The all-Black cast deftly weaves narration, dance, and traditional music to tell the story. As always, the cast is comprised of professional performers, amateurs, and youth. The formula for its success is bringing together talented adults to work as role models who work with and mentor youth with a goal of achieving excellence and to foster good will.
The production of its values align with Mechanics Hall values and our mission to present inspirational performances of artistic excellence and cultural relevance. It is our hope that Black Nativity becomes a Worcester holiday classic and encourages a generational tradition patterned after the success of the Boston organization.
