Did you know that when the current – day EcoTarium was founded in 1825, its name was the Worcester Lyceum of Natural History?! Over the years, its name changed to the Worcester Natural History Society and, eventually, the EcoTarium.
What’s a lyceum, you ask? A lyceum is a hall for public lectures or discussions, or an association providing public lectures, concerts and entertainment. In celebration of our organization’s beginning, the EcoTarium is offering four lyceum sessions to bring the community together for lectures and discussions throughout our 200th anniversary year.
On Wednesday, May 28th, the EcoTarium/Worcester Natural History Society is partnering with the Museum of Worcester and the Worcester Women’s History Project to offer our second 200th anniversary lyceum! Join us at the Museum of Worcester to learn about “Worcester Women Naturalists, Past and Present.”
By the late 19th century, women naturalists were not only active participants in the Worcester Natural History Society as members, curators and lecturers, but were sharing their scientific knowledge locally and even nationally. Their work has been largely overlooked but has undoubtedly informed the way we think about natural history today. Join us to learn about some of the women impacting the fields of natural history, past and present. There will be a Q & A session after the presentation.
This event is free to attend but requires registration!
